Woman held after a handgun is pulled in a Winnipeg cab

Police say a 45-year-old pulled a .22 in a cab on Sunday and is in custody. No shots were fired.

Winnipeg police say a woman pulled a handgun in a taxi in the Munroe East neighbourhood on Sunday 11 October and told the driver to take her to a particular place. No shots were fired. She is in custody.

Officers were called at about 2.30pm to Concordia Avenue and Louelda Street. West District general patrol officers say the 45-year-old got into a taxi in that area, produced the gun and gave the direction. The driver switched on the cab's emergency beacon, got out and called police. She then moved into the driver's seat. The keys were not there. She ran, and officers arrested her in the 1000 block of Concordia Avenue. Police say they seized an SGS 1911 .22 handgun.

CTV News and CBC both quote a police account released on Monday. Neither report names the taxi firm, and neither says the driver was injured.

The charges

Police say she is facing several firearms charges. Those named so far are possession of a firearm knowing that possession is unauthorised, unauthorised possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition. CBC's account of the same release also includes possession contrary to a prohibition order. The charges have not been tested in court.

CityNews reported that police identified her as Laney Sandra Nobiss, 45.

A separate attack, already reported

This is not the hammer attack of Saturday 3 October. In that case a 26-year-old Unicity driver was found unconscious at Nairn Avenue and Watt Street after he was struck while asking a man at the window how he would pay. TaxiFeed has already published that: Winnipeg cabbie hospitalised after a hammer attack.
