Nottingham cabbie fined after knocking down 91-year-old in Daybrook

Careless driving: broken ankle; £219 fine, six points — judge cites momentary lapse.

A Nottingham taxi driver has been fined after knocking down a 91-year-old woman who was crossing in front of him at a Daybrook junction.

Nottingham Post reports Ismail Sebugwawo, 48, edged out of Sherbrook Road into Mansfield Road at about 2.45pm on 28 January and struck the pedestrian, who suffered a broken ankle and said she lost her independence. Judge Mark Watson at Nottingham Crown Court accepted a momentary lapse while looking for a gap in traffic, not deliberate harm; Sebugwawo stopped and stayed. He pleaded guilty to careless driving after a dangerous-driving charge was not pursued, was fined £219 with £85 costs and six penalty points. Mitigation stressed a ban would hit his livelihood; he had no previous convictions.
